How
to make a Purchase
Michael
Kanteena is
of Laguna and Navajo heritage. He began to develop this style
of work several years ago. Wishing to learn about his ancient
roots, which he knew went back to New Mexico's Chaco Canyon (the
Anasazi culture), he began collecting archeological catalogues
of pottery forms. Through extensive study, trial and error, and
even consultation with archaeologists, he developed a pottery
that is remarkably close recreations of the Chacoan and Mesa
Verde potteries.
Recently
his studies have expanded to the Mimbres and ancient Mexican
Indian forms where human and animal effigies are common. Most
recently he has worked with some ancient Hopi designs. He
works in the traditional way using hand dug clay and pit firing
which gives the pieces the patina of antiquity.
Michael
has received several awards of recognition for his work including
First Place at the Gallup Inter-tribal Ceremonials for the last
three years. He has received recognition in Southwest Art Magazine
and his work appears in several galleries throughout
the Southwest and at the Wheelwright Museum of Santa Fe.
